RNC Protest Photos - 2004/08/29

Images and movies from today's protest against the Republican National Convention in New York City. See a map of the protests here. Size estimates vary, but the Times says 500k, and it certainly felt much larger than last year's protests estimated at 250k.

The first thing I saw coming up to street level: surveillance.

Directions to the protests from a United For Peace worker.

My first sighting of the masses.

1000 Coffins commemorating soldiers lost in Iraq.

The thick mass of people approaching 7th Ave.

A bizarre sideshow.

With chanting.

Count the dots in the sky; I see 6.

Feeder march.

Feeder march.

Boxing with Bush.

Quakers, known mainly to me via Bill Moyers' Now on PBS.

An amazing spirit.

7th Ave, the nexus. Didn't move here for an hour.

Disabled people got out to protest.

Many took a break at Whole Foods.

The obligatory Swastika/Republican reference. Kind of silly.

Tired protestors.

Zen protestors.

Cops push protestors on.

Gap opens up in march, but many thousands still came.

Anti-protestor protestors. It takes all kinds, right?

In case it wasn't clear what this was all about.

Boos and cat-calls and worse as we passed the RNC area.

More boos, fingers, peace-signs, etc..

Very short movie of booing and yelling.

Longer movie of angry sounds at epicenter of march.

Glorious Fox-News presiding over events.

My sign. On the back:
